2.02.2011

Nintendo is up to it again!  They're releasing a new and innovative gaming console (this time handheld) called the Nintendo 3DS.  Honestly after the release of the DSi, I definitely wasn't expecting what they're going to be releasing on the 27th of March, 2011.

All of the hype surrounding the new 3DS is that it will provide its users will full 3D without the usage of glasses.  I was watching an interview with some of the developers of the Nintendo 3DS and they all said the exact same thing about the 3D feature.  Nintendo isn't into the business of making the images pop out at you and be 'all in your face,' it's more so a play with depth perception and showing the depth of objects.  For example, one of the new games being released is called Pilotwings Resort and it is basically you flying around trying to avoid and collect objects.  The developers at Nintendo want you to be able to gauge the amount of distance between your character and the objects without difficulty.

Hardware

Backwards Compatibility
This was pretty obvious, but of course there will be backwards compatibility with the Nintendo 3DS.  That means you will be able to play Nintendo DS and DSi games on the 3DS as long as it's in 2D mode.

Screen
Of course we're going to be graced with the 2 screen displays, the top screen being wide screen and the bottom screen being the standard display.

Analog stick

Analog stick
Alongside the original controls, there will be a newly added analog stick that will assist you in maneuvering your characters throughout the 3D world.

2, 3D cameras

Camera
The 3D doesn't stop just at the games themselves.  Nintendo also placed 2 cameras on the  3DS system to assist you in taking 3D pictures.  Once again, the photos will play with the depth perception of the human eye and allow you to actually be able to capture moments in 3D.  Pretty bad ass.

Memory Card
Here's GREAT news guys!  EVERY SINGLE 3DS is going to have a 2GB SD card included with the system.  Now we don't have to go out and find our own!

3DS: 3D Slider
3D Slider
A cool feature that Nintendo's providing is the innovative 3D slider.  This funky little feature will allow you to reduce the intensity of the 3D within the game your playing.  Another cool thing is that you will be able to completely disable the 3D all together.  Every game that is released for the 3DS will be fully compatible with 2D and look just as amazing as if you were playing it in 3D.

Motion Sensor & Gyro Sensor
Though most of you have heard of motion sensors and less have heard of 'gyro sensor', let me enlighten you a little.  The motion and gyro sensors will work together with the Nintendo 3DS and your movement to pick up on any motions made while playing the game.  You will be able to tilt the system and have it pick up the movement and register it.

Charging cradle

Charging
Unlike the other Nintendo systems, this time around we're going to have a 'charging cradle' which is basically a plate for your 3DS to sit in that will be able to charge it over night.  You will also be able to use a new feature called 'Spot Pass' (we'll talk about that later) at any time of day or night.

Aqua Blue

Colour
You will have a choice between two colours; 'Cosmo black' and 'Aqua blue'.  Hopefully there will be coloured cases/skins that will be released for those of us who prefer the look of white, pink, red, etc.  The stylus for both models will be silver, instead of the full black that the DSi stylus' had.

Retractable stylus

Stylus
One problem that I had personally noticed with the DSi is the length of the stylus, it was too short for my lengthy fingers.  Fortunately this time around, Nintendo has made the stylus' expandable and shrinkable so you will be able to adjust it to your own comfort setting.

Street Pass
Street Pass is exactly what it sounds like.  You will be able to have your 3DS system in sleep mode in your bag/purse and when you pass other 3DS owners down the street, you will be able to trade game data like Mii characters, leader boards, and custom characters.  It's a pretty interesting concept.

Spot Pass
I said that we'd touch base on this further and so here we are.  Spot Pass is a newly added feature that will allow you to detect wifi hot spots and help you to access more Mii characters, leader boards, and custom characters with those around you.

Games

Now, this is the most exciting part of the 3DS for me, personally.

Nintendo will be RE-RELEASING Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the 3DS.  I have personally beat this game more time than I can count on my toes and my fingers and so having the option to play it in 3D is like a dream come true.  I'm most definitely going to be picking up the system, even if it's just for the new release of Zelda!  Some other games being released include: Pilotwings Resort, Super Street Fighter IV, nintendogs + cats, Steel Diver, Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars, Asphalt, Kid Icarus: Uprising, and Madden NFL football.  There will be a copious amount of games being released, and those are just to name a few.

Software
As for the software, there are going to be a copious amount of new updates available for you to dwell upon.  You will be able to access a Mii Maker, which is a feature available on your 3DS where you can design what you want your character to look like, much like on the Wii.  You will also be able to use AR Games, which are some special 'arcade like' games installed for you.  Another feature will be called Face Raiders, which is where you can take a picture of you or a family member and put them on targets that you can shoot.  Pretty sadistic, don't you think?
Another feature is the Activity Log, which will track all of your game play on the system.  You will also have the Internet Browser, the ability to capture 3D videos, Nintendo 3DS Sound (you can transfer songs to your SD card and listen to them on your 3DS console).

The best software feature is the System Transfer, or at least that's my personal opinion.  System Transfer is a feature that allows you to transfer downloadable software that was already purchased on a previous Nintendo 3DS system to another 3DS system.  The BEST part is that any purchases that you have made on your Nintendo DS, Nintendo DSi or Nintendo DSi XL systems will be able to be transferred to your Nintendo 3DS.   Though it is rumoured that there is a limit to how many times you can transfer software, Nintendo will be keeping us updated.

You will be able to test out the Nintendo 3DS yourself.  Nintendo will be placing interactive kiosks all over the nation (USA and Canada) before the system is released into stores.  The locations and the dates of the trials will be announced soon and we'll be sure to keep you up to date on it.  Until then, take a look at this promo trailer for thew new Nintendo 3DS, to be released on March 27th, 2011.
