Many gamers have been raving about the return of Dead Island after its three year hiatus.  They came out with a brilliant cinematic trailer that makes you feel like you’re part of the action, alongside that it also made you feel like you’re watching a movie or a short film.  If this game is lucky, it’ll live up to the hype and gamers will be able to be sucked into this zombie island and lose themselves.

Dead Island is supposedly a first person “zombie-slasher/action-RPG” related somewhat to your typical zombie films.  There will be a single player campaign and up to four friends will be able to join the game and drop in/drop out on the cooperative online mode.  It is being developed by Techland and published by Deep Silver.

Techland (the developers of Call of Juarez) sets the video game at the Royal Palms resort on Banoi Island which is located in Papua New Guinea with characters named Xian Mei (a staff member at the hotel), Logan, Sam, and Purna.  No, there isn’t a real Banoi Island but they certainly do their job to make you believe that there is one.  Banoi Island brings thousands of tourists worldwide and so you are lead to assume that the population would be high.  You and your character check into this Chinese hotel chain and then things start to get weird, starting with guests attacking other guests, infecting them with this disease that begins to spread rapidly.  Think Dawn of the Dead.  The objective of the game is the attempt to escape Banoi Island unscathed and uninfected.

As for the fighting, it’s going to be based mostly on melee weapons so it’s going to be your job to try to fend for your life by using every day items that you can find scoured around Banoi Island.  You will be able to use such weapons as a pipe, paddle, or a broomstick, everything is available to your usage.  Though Dead Island is based mostly on melee, you will be able to gain access to firearms but ammunition is extremely hard to find so it seems to make more sense to pick up that pipe when you see one.  One thing that I find pretty realistic is that your melee weapons can degrade/break with excessive use and if you favour a certain melee weapon, you will have the option to repair it at a workbench (there will be certain workbench locations).

Now that we’ve discussed the shooter options, let’s dabble in the RPG elements.  There will be a levelling system and a skill tree that will assist you in becoming stronger over the course of the game.  As you level up, you will gain access to new tactics, new character animations, and of course boosts in stats.

Dead Island will be multi platform and will be available on the PS3, XBox 360, and the PC later this year.

Although the following trailer really took a toll on my emotional heart strings, the concept was brilliant, though relatively depressing.  Usually, I'd say "enjoy" but I don't really know how enjoyable you will find it.
