Silent Hill has been around for as long as I can remember and we’re being given the eighth instalment of the series, Silent Hill: Downpour in Q3 of 2011. Though most would assume that a series as in depth and intense as Silent Hill would become repetitive, Downpour is going to give us a whole new horrifying storyline. Though once again, players will be engulfed in the dark and terrible world of Silent Hill where they are forced to face their deepest sins and most vivid fears.
The game is to be released on the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360, it will be developed by Vatra (Rush’N Attack Ex-Patriot) and published by Konami. It will also be bringing forth the third-person perspective that we all know and love.
The plot revolves around a survival horror experience. Basically, a prison transport vehicle gets veered off of the road and it leaves inmate Murphy Pendleton stranded in Silent Hill. You will encounter brain boggling puzzles and terrifying creatures as you venture through the town. Much like many other RPG’s being released this year, you will be relying on standard every day tools (such as wooden chairs and glass bottles) to use as weaponry to fend off your enemies and defend yourself. This storyline is going to be for more of the hardcore Silent Hill fans that have been playing the series since it first started, it will also appeal to those who enjoy deep, psychological horror stories. Alongside the main quest, players will also have the chance to embark on various side quests and they change dependant on the paths that you take in the game and your play style.
Associate producer Tomm Hulett comments, “Having a compelling story is the key element to a good Silent Hill game. It’s what set SH1 apart from the other early survival horror games, why SH2 is so fondly remembered, and so on. Of course, an important aspect of this is how the story ties into the horrific things the player encounters.”
“We have this huge city at our disposal, yet in the past, it was comprised primarily of locked doors. We wanted to give players a bit more incentive to search around and check those doors without facing a constant barrage of discouraging locks.” Says producer Devin Shatsky as we explained the difference in Silent Hill: Downpour’s environment compared to the other games in the SH series.
A quote regarding the side missions reads “This gives the player a greater sense that they are ‘exploring the town’ and then rewarded with these mini-stories. We’ve been very careful to keep these immersive enough to make the player feel like they’re still a part of the main story, yet separate enough that they aren’t forced into completing all of them in a linear fashion to reach the ending,” commented Devin Shatsky.
