Mortal Kombat Demo is short but sweet.

The demo to the new Mortal Kombat game was released Tuesday on PSN, and I would assume Xbox Live as well.
The demo was released on PSN a few weeks ago, but was only available to Playstation Plus subscribers. Now everyone has it.
The demo is pretty short, but that's to be expected of a fighting game. It is only a short traditional ladder campaign, with only two stages unlocked: The Forest, and The Bridge/Pit. It also only has 4 characters currently unlocked: Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Mileena, and Johnny Cage.
Other than those demo limitations, you see everything you would expect in a fighting game. Mortal Kombat has gone back to the tradition 2D scrolling stage. 3D Arenas are soooo PS2 anyways. ;)
the controls are pretty solid and easy to get used to, although the only thing that Mortal Kombat has always done that most other fighting games do not do, or no longer do, is blocking with an actual button. In most other fighting games out nowadays, you simply go "back" and it'll automatically block if you get hit. Not in Mortal Kombat. To block, you must press the R2 button (PS3 controls). I can respect that. It means you really gotta pay attention to your opponent's movements, and not button-mash the controls to win. That won't really do the trick in this brutal fighter.

Mortal Kombat is indeed brutal. Returning to the M rating it needs and deserves, Netherrealm Studios does no disappoint with the gore, and the brutal X-Ray Special Attack, disgustingly awesome Fatalities, and more.

Expect much more brutality as the full game hits April 19th, 2011.
