No More 3D for Nintendo!

With the way that technology is advancing, we here at VGL are wondering…just when is there going to be another 3D console released? Nintendo says that their next one won’t be 3D though, regardless of how well the 3DS is doing.

“Glasses-free is a big deal. We’ve not said publicly what the next thing for us will be in the home console space, but based on what we’ve learned on 3D, likely, that won’t be it,” says Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime in an interview with CNN.

Nintendo had created the first commercially available 3D product back in the 1980’s. They manufactured 3D goggles and a disc player that would be able to be connected to a computer. It was called the Nintendo Entertainment System in the states. Unfortunately, the project never went anywhere and it never left Japan. After that they had created the Virtual Boy which is where you could look through stationary glasses and play around with red characters that popped out from the screen by using a wireless controller. From there derived the Game Boy and so on so forth.

Though present day Nintendo’s thoughts have never strayed from 3D, they’re not into the habit of producing a product that needs the 3D glasses incorporated with the system.

“I think that at Nintendo, we realize that any sort of goggle-type 3D technology was not going to work,” says Hideki Konno (director/producer of Nintendo’s key products).

Even though your hopes may be shattered by the thought of not having another 3D Nintendo console, don’t be discouraged. “This is an entertainment device; make no mistake,” Fils-Aime said. “It’s not purely a gaming device.”

Indeed, the 3DS is compatible with 3D movies. You will be able to buy 3D movies to watch on the 3DS and you will also be able to stream videos from Netflix.

Even though we’re not going to be holding our breath for a 3D console from Nintendo, I’m sure that whatever they’re working on now, it will revolutionize the video gaming industry once again.

Bravo, Nintendo, bravo.
