Activision Blizzard: New MMO?

What’s the first game that you think of when you hear MMO?  My automatic response would have to be World of Warcraft and the people who made that MMO monster possible, Activision Blizzard, are set to be releasing a new MMO in late 2013.  The new game is titled under a code name, Project Titan and we have a feeling that it will be an extremely anticipated MMO for the year 2013.

Blizzard want to remind everyone that this game is not trying to replace WoW and it’s also not going to be another expansion to WoW, it’s simply something new and fresh.  “There are over 12 million global paying subscribers that are active in our game.  We are not going to turn our back on them and we intend to continue to support that franchise for many many years to come.  As to our new unannounced game, we believe that it will be more complementary than competitive.  And while people do have a limited amount of free time that they can devote to these types of games, we do think that people will want to check out the new and the old.  We think the new one is very compelling and is going to capture a lot of hearts and minds and will be very successful for us.  But we also believe that many people will continue playing World of Warcraft because they have such a huge collection of friends and community.  We have taken some of our most experience developers and put them on this project.  We believe we have a dream team.  These are the people who made WoW a success.  We are going to blow people’s minds.”

In November of 2010, a document had leaked online that showed what Blizzard was going to be up to for the upcoming years and that’s where the code name Project Titan arose from.  Regardless of whether the document was legit or not, the vice president of Blizzard certainly had no problems with confirming that the project was underway but refused to release any further details.  But of course we couldn’t leave you with just that…

Blizzard’s chief operating officer is now saying a few words about the upcoming MMO, and when we say few we really mean he’s being as vague as humanly possible.  “We really try to learn what we’ve done in the past,” Paul Sams says.  “When you architect the game, you architect it with the vision that exists at that time.  We’ve got some vision for what is coming and how gaming has evolved.  Some of the new things that maybe we would want to do, we can’t do as elegantly because of the way we’ve architected the old game.  It’s easier if we are starting fresh.  So with that being said, we are doing that sort of thing and it’s also not the same game.”

With that being said, Blizzard has definitely proven that they are capable of shattering sales records and engulfing/drawing players into their fantastic fantasy worlds, but with Paul Sams sentence, “We are going to blow people’s minds,” let’s see if they’re able to do it a second time.
