Anonymous vs. Sony

Okay so we have a vigilante internet hacker group going after Sony for claiming their right to attempt prosecution to the PlayStation hacker George Hotz (GeoHot).  The group called Anonymous are infamous for their spoken manifestos to many internet related companies for “abusing the declaration of independence” when it comes to internet hacktivism and “freedom of speech.”

Now it seems that Anonymous has taken an interest in GeoHot and with all of the fall0verflow hacking collective, including Graf_Chokolo (another PS3 hacker).

A snippet of their manifesto that they had posted on their message board is as follows:

“Congratulations!  You are now receiving the attention of Anonymous.  Your recent legal actions against fellow internet citizens, GeoHot and Graf_Chokolo have been deemed an unforgivable offence against free speech and internet freedom, primary sources of free lulz (and you know how we feel about lulz).”

“You have abused the judicial system in an attempt to censor information about how your products work,” the delcaration continues.  “You have victimized your own customers merely for possessing and sharing information, and continue to target those who seek this information.  In doing so you have violated the privacy of thousands of innocent people who only sought the free distribution of information.”

“Your suppression of this information is motivated by corporate greed and the desire for complete control over the actions of individuals who purchase and use your products, at least when those actions threaten to undermine the corrupt stranglehold you seek to maintain over copy wrong, oops, ‘copyright.’”

At the end of their alleged “manifesto” is basically says that they will be attacking Sony’s private domains.  The funny part is that as of last night, Sony has been suffering some stability issues revolving around the PSN and users not being able to access their accounts (though Bretto had found a way to fix it and that is to switch to a hardline connection).  They have also said that they will be arranging “sit ins” at the Sony Stores across the continent.

The PSN is also experiencing a lot of lag when browsing the PSN store and using the internet browser.

We would just like to say that there HAS NOT been an official statement from PlayStation regarding the coincidence between the threats from Anonymous and the issues with the PlayStation servers today.

We’ve come to the conclusion that this is an absolutely ridiculous way to get your point across (if the server malfunctions are indeed related to Anonymous).  Just sayin’
