Department of Homeland Security Gets Involved

It all started out as a minor let down and now it’s actually gotten the attention of Homeland Security.  We found out that that U.S. Department of Homeland Security has just begun to work alongside the FBI, 22 state attorneys general, and the Federal Trade Commission on the mysterious case of the PSN breach.  By now you know that the servers have been hacked and this has lead to 77 million users being offline and 77 million accounts have been jeopardized.

The FBI confirmed that it is “presently reviewing the available information in an effort to determine the facts and circumstances concerning this alleged criminal activity,” states Kotaku.

You may be wondering who’s information was stolen well let us enlighten you.  Some of the accounts that were hacked included those of government officials, businesses, financial institutions and regular civilians alike.  Earlier this week Sony advised their users to be wary of telephone scams that might prove to be linked to the data stolen from the PSN.

They Were Stolen - And Sold

Our hopes were blown completely out of the water when we found out that the hackers weren’t hacking solely for good will, but for actual rewards.

It is said that the hackers who claim to have hacked the PSN are trying to sell the stolen credit card information on message boards.  Apparently they have names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, birthdays and COMPLETE credit card info (including the CC number, expiration date AND the security code) for sale.

According to TrendMicro security expert Kevin Stevens, it is said that they tried to sell the information back to Sony but the multimedia giant refused.  He also says that 2.2 million credit cards are in the database, people are starting to complain about fraudulent charges all over the internet but there is no proof that they’re tied to the PSN breach.
