VGL Presents: Alice Madness Returns review

Posted by: Kristastrxphe

Welcome, my Legion! Kris here, with another new review!
Today I am reviewing Spicy Horse’s sequel to American McGee’s Alice; Alice Madness Returns, published by EA for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

American McGee’s Alice made its debut when it was released in October of 2000. Since then, it has become a cult favorite and has never been forgotten. We wanted more… And it’s finally come.
Alice: Madness Returns is about Alice Liddell, who has spent most of her life in Rutledge Asylum ever since her parents were killed in a fire. She now lives in London under the care of her psychiatrist, Dr. Angus Bumby. While walking down the street, she finds a white cat and decides to follow it. Alice then returns to Wonderland where the Chesire Cat tells her that things have changed. Alice must save her Wonderland once again, while learning to cope with her being traumatized over her family’s death.

So, the story concept is pretty solid. There are many cut scenes and narration to keep the pace and story apparent in the game. The voice acting; with the exception of a few minor things; sound pretty good. Alice in specific sounds wonderful. The sound and music in the game sound great as well.
The graphics in Alice are really interesting. With all of the crazy and interesting color choices, the distorted shape of the characters and the level design, this game does look pretty incredible. The world itself is absolutely stunning, with the exception of backgrounds popping in and items like picnic baskets just popping into existence when you unlock them. It’s a little off in those departments, but the actual levels look stunning.
Alice’s character design is drop-dead gorgeous. The other characters in the game haven’t changed much from the original American McGee’s Alice, but they still look more detailed and much better.

The game mechanics are pretty simple and easy to learn. Different weapons are used by a specific button on the controller. I am playing the Playstation 3 version, so for example, to attack with the Vorpal Sword, the button is Square; and I won’t go into detail about the other unique and interesting weapons in the game.
One might say Alice is a mindless button-mashing hack n slash. And while the combat pretty much is like that, certain weapons do better against certain enemies, and mastering dodging, deflecting, jumping, and etc, keeps it really engaging and fun in my opinion.

The platforming in Alice is spot on. The world layout and over all look just makes platforming, jumping, etc, just so much more interesting as you get to run around the gorgeous map designs. Speaking of platforming, one thing that is rather different, but I really enjoy it, is Alice cannot grab onto ledges. They did not ad any form of grab when at the edge of anything. To work around the lack of grabbing and also climbing, Alice has been given a triple jump. Alice may jump up to 3 times while still in the air for getting some really good distance and range. I don’t recall many platformers that do something like that, so it makes you stop and kind of look around for a moment, deciding whether or not you can make that jump or not, or need to find a different way around it.

The puzzles work out really well in levels as well. From finding invisible walkways to different areas, shooting at a clock to reset it, or even mini games such as a side-scrolling shooter game, picture puzzles, music puzzles, etc… All are well placed into the world. Some can be trickier than others to figure out. Scattered throughout the maps are collectables such as Alice’s memories to further the back story, bottles, pig-snouts, etc… In the beginning of the game, Alice bathes in a fountain labeled Drink Me, that gives her an infinite power to shrink (by holding down the L2? button). This gives Alice the ability to travel into and/or under small places such as key holes. She cannot attack nor jump while you are holding down the Skrink button, so keep that in mind.
Something I didn’t realize when I first started the game, until around the point I am at right now, is that your weapons can be upgraded by the points you collect by killing enemies, breaking open crates, etc. The points come in the form of teeth (bone and gold ones). For some reason I just didn’t question what the teeth were used for. Silly me. Anyways… Well, it turns out in the weapons section on the menu screen; you can spend the teeth for Leveling up your weapons from 1 to 2, and so on. Another fun thing is when Alice is near-death, she can go into a super-powered mode called Hysteria, where she turns completely white with blood all over her, and you can just go to town on the enemies if you are overwhelmed. Note that you need to be near death (by having only ½ of 1 flower left on your life bar). Activate Hysteria by pressing L3 (on ps3 controls).

Over all, Alice: Madness Returns is a very clever, and fantastic sequel to a great game from our past. The dark and twisted story of Alice by American McGee is a new look on a well-known tale. On top of all of that, the game is just fun as hell to play. It looks great, it plays great. Oh, and did I mention NOSTALGIA out the ass!? Those who have been waiting for this game since American McGee debuted Alice in 2000

On a final note, I pre-ordered Alice from the EA Store online, which had a (what I believe to be) exclusive deal for a code to unlock the original American MeGee’s Alice game, rescaled and recoded to run on whatever system you bought Madness Returns for. The code gave you the original game for free, but it was released on PSN and the Xbox store for $9.99 or 800 MSpoints. So that is some exciting news. Now everyone has full access to the full American McGee’s Alice story as well as the new game, to complete the story.

Most importantly, I give Alice: Madness Returns a whopping 9.75 cups of tea out of 10.

NHL 2012 Updates

Posted by: Tiara Sleight

Here's a brief synopsis on some of the improvements that EA has put forth in their new game, NHL 2012.

Improvements

  • Smoother cycling down low - those who are playing in the corners of the rink will be able to grab the puck without decreasing in speed
  • Puck physics - the puck will be able to roll on end from rebounds and those players with lower puck control stats will need a few extra seconds to get the puck
  • New skating/fatigue skating animations - at the beginning of the sprint, players will be able to move quicker but as they get more tired they will drop their heads and skate slower
  • "Skate with intent logic" - automatically, players will skate at an advanced pace when breaking through the neutral zone towards open ice
  • "Authentic helmet rules" - if a player loses their helmet during a game they will continue to keep playing though in the CHL (Canadian Hockey League) the player has to automatically leave the ice.

Skater Qualities - as related to NHL players

  • "Dump and chaser" - 3rd and 4th line grinder, strong board play (ex. Chris Neil/Aaron Asham)
  • "Setup man" - he is the playmaker, loves to distribute the puck (ex. Henrik Sedin)
  • "Drives the net" - attacks the net in order to make rebounds (ex. Ryan Kesler)
  • "One-knee specialists" - they will be shooting one-timers from one knee (ex. Steven Stamkos)
  • "Net agitators" - live in the front of the net, love banging in garbage goals (ex. Tomas Holmstrom)
  • "Shoots on the rush" - pretty self explanatory, think Alex Ovechkin.

EA Sports To Open Retail Stores

Posted by: Bret

EA sports has finally decided that they want to cut out the middle man and bring to life a chain of retail stores this fall. This past year they have been launching several different things in order to increase profit. For years they have provided great games and online services, however, they believe they can reach even more consumers with this offline move where they can actually be more apart of the sales.

The question is, will EA keep their games stocked in other stores or will they pull all of their games off the shelf to decrease competition for themselves. We should be hearing more about these stores and how everything is going to play out. Sounds like an awesome thing EA is doing!

Battlefield Play4Free

EA has released a beta today of another one of their Battlefield inspired and FREE shooting games titled Battlefield Play4Free for the PC.

This one is EA’s second Battlefield inspired shooter but they are very dissimilar to one another.  One thing that differs them is that Play4Free focusses more on realistic weapons, characters, maps, and environments.  Alongside this, you will also be able to purchase "Battlefunds" which is a virtual currency used to upgrade your characters and weapons.

The game itself features a 16v16 (32 player) multiplayer support and maps from Battlefield 2 alongside weapons and classes from Battlefield: Bad Company 2.  You will be able to have access to 16 vehicles including: Mil Mi-28 attack helicopter, the F35 VTOL jet fighter, the Russian T-90 main battle tank and the light strike vehicle.

Battlefield 3 Potential Release Date "Leak"

If you’re aware of the Battlefield franchise, you’re also going to be quite aware of the fact that their biggest competitor is the Call of Duty franchise.  Even though Activision isn’t releasing any official details (as of yet), the inevitable video game Call of Duty 3 is supposedly going to be released at some point.  With examination of trends, every Call of Duty game is generally released on an annual basis in November.

If you take a look at the attached screenshot (which is en Francais) you can see that the “release date” for Battlefield 3 is set on November 2nd.  Though Wednesday’s are not known for video game release days, could it be that EA is looking to released this FPS before Call of Duty 3 hits the shelves?

Madden Curse in Your Hands!

With the new Madden 12 you may have the option to make or break a “football stars” career.  That’s right, you will be placed with the burden of choosing who the Madden curse will be passed on to next.  Every year when a cover player is chosen for the Madden series, they either find themselves injured throughout the season or their career will be at an all time low.  Now it’s your choice!

EA games and ESPN have teamed up to create a bracket-like voting system to where you can vote between two NFL players who you think should be on the cover.  Mind you, the choices have been pre-made depending on who agreed to be on the cover.  There are several options between two players and as time progresses from March 21st to April 26th, players will be eliminated (by vote) and whoever’s left standing at the finals will be chosen for the cover of Madden 2012.

“Whether it be from fans, media, agents, or even the players themselves, there’s never a shortage of opinions when it comes to the annual selection of the Madden NFL cover athlete,” says Anthony Stevenson, Senior Product Manager of EA Sports.  “So this year we’re handing the keys over to the public.  ESPN continues to be a tremendous partner of the Madden NFL franchise, and it makes perfect sense for the ‘SportsNattion’ to be the platform that gives fans the ultimate say in who graces the cover of Madden NFL 12.”

You can venture on to ESPN’s website and choose your favourite player there.  ESPN will also be interviewing the candidates and providing official updates along the way that you can also tune in to.  Remember, not all players are on the site, but a vast majority of them are!

Here's a funny little video to bring your mood up for the day :)

Activision vs. EA Lawsuit Continues

By now we’ve all heard of the lawsuit of Activision vs. EA and there have been recent updates to the case.  Electronic Arts and ex-Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella are being sued by game publisher Activision due to the fact that Activision alleges that Vince Zampella and Jason West were conspiring with EA to assist them in Battlefield 2 at the expense of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

As for the update on the case, according to California Superior Court Judge Elihu Berle, the case will go continue.  It was deemed by the judge that Activision provided enough evidence to allow the 400 million dollar lawsuit to commence.

Prior to this, Electronic Arts had wanted to have the lawsuit thrown out of court but Judge Berle disagreed.

Crysis 2 Demo Abandoned

As with most demos, you expect a decent performance as well as a great chance to play the game that you’ve been waiting for.  Or you’re part of the group who just searches the PSN to play new things and experience new titles.  Either way, you are expecting something, ANYTHING out of the demo.  EA (Electronic Arts) and Crytek realized this when they decided to pull the plug on the Crysis 2 multiplayer demo that was available for the PS3, on the PSN.

Some people had no problems loading the demo and playing it but there were a handful that were complaining about the connection issues and the extremely long download times.  They issued a comment on their website:

“Thank you for your interest in the PlayStation 3 version of the Crysis 2 multiplayer demo.  Though many gamers have had a great experience with playing the demo, we are aware that others have been experiencing server connection delays.  We’ve identified the root cause and have decided to close the PS3 demo in the next 24 hours to ensure all issues are resolved when the game launches next week.  Our priority is to ensure that the final product is flawless at launch.”

Although it kind of blows for the people who were hoping to get a glimpse of the game during this weekend, as long as the polished version is up to par I’m sure that most of you don’t mind.  And plus, Crysis 2 hits shelves next week Tuesday so it’s not like you have to wait a month for it to come out.

Alice, What have you done?

Madness Returns.

Over 11 years ago, American McGee transformed the classic Lewis Carroll tale into an even darker, more gruesome tale as a 3rd person action game, American McGee's Alice.
On February 19th, 2009, American McGee announced that the rare and what seems to be long-forgotten game will have a sequel, Alice: Madness Returns, developed by Spicy Horse Studios and EA.

The game takes place 11 years after the events in the first game, which is also the amount of time between the two games' releases, where Alice has spent the past 11 years in an Asylum, as visions of her parents dying in an accidental fire has been haunting and traumatizing her. Now Alice has been released from the Asylum into the care of a London psychiatrist. However, now that she's back on the streets, her trauma and hallucinations are becoming more frequent and severe. Alice decides to return to Wonderland in hopes that she can find some comfort, however her insane state of mind has also warped Wonderland into madness... again.

Check out these absolutely beautiful and terrifying teaser trailers, as we wait until Q4 of 2011 for the White Rabbit, and help save Alice and Wonderland, from evil.

On a personal note, I could not be more excited for Madness Returns. I loved American McGee's Alice. I love the original tale and every version of it. This will be a twisted and dark fairy tale I will be damn sure not to miss out on. Oh yeah, and they made Alice look super hot. :3 This is one of my Most Anticipated Games of 2011.

Battlefield 3...Fall 2011

Hey guys, Bretto here and I just found out that Battlefield 3 will be headed our way later on this year! We know that the game will be powered by DICE's Frostbite 2 engine. We hear they will re-implement fighter jets and the prone position removed from previous games. Some of the new features of BF3 are the ability to drag fallen comrades to safety and mounting weapons to almost any part of the terrain.

EA has confirmed if you purchase the Limited Edition or Tier 1 Edition of Medal of Honor within 1 year of its release date (October 12), you will receive an invitation to be qualified for the beta.

Last for you we have a teaser trailer recently released by EA to get your Battlefield blood flowing. Enjoy!
